The Mission of Albert Payson Terhune Elementary School is to foster academic excellence by promoting learning and creativity in a safe and child-centered environment through a partnership of family, staff, and the community.  Our goal is to create independent thinkers and social problem solvers who are respectful of themselves and others.

                  

 Dear Parents / Guardians,

It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of another school year.  In May we got a chance to meet our new Terhune students at a wonderful Kindergarten Orientation.  We also enjoyed Spring Concerts, Field Day and the third annual Family Luncheon Barbecue where our parents and students got a chance to enjoy lunch together.  

Although June is our last month of school, it still promises to be a very busy one.  There are numerous field trips, a “Book Exchange Day,” Kindergarten 2008 Celebration, 4th Grade Lip Sync, Father’s Day Project, 5th Grade Day,  5th Grade Advancement & Awards, K-4 Final Awards, End of the Year Class Parties and  5th Grade Clap-out just to name a few!

As this is our last newsletter, I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support throughout the year.  It has been another great year for A. P. Terhune Elementary School and we appreciate all of the support you have given.  Your commitment to your child has truly added to the success of our school.   Albert Payson Terhune is truly a wonderful place for children to learn where academic excellence prevails.  This year we have wonderful memories to look back upon which include our Winter and Spring Concerts, the outstanding grade level performing arts assemblies throughout the year, author in residence program for 4th graders, Multicultural Fair, after-school “Hip-Hop Class”, DARE program and our Earth Day Celebrations just to name a few.  In addition, our 4th graders gained much knowledge from two field trip experiences at the Meadowlands Environmental Center.  Our 5th graders had an experience of a lifetime at Camp Warwick learning about our environment and getting along with one another. 

I would also like to thank all our teaching staff, child study team, school support staff which includes our custodial, secretarial, Para professional, Cafeteria/Playground aides and, the district support staff, parents volunteers who have worked so hard to provide our students with so many challenging and exciting educational programs and opportunities.  I also want to especially thank our PTO officers –and numerous volunteers for giving of their time and working so hard for the benefit of our children.  It has been truly a pleasure for me to work with such an enthusiastic and caring group of parents.

Enjoy this summer by taking some time with your child to walk along a beach, share a book, take a drive to nowhere, a bike trip across town, share the wonders found in a star filled summer sky, and other such family activities.  These special moments have a far greater positive impact than time spent in any program or activity your child can join for the summer.   Such time spent together may indeed slow down the summer months and add quality to the joys of childhood which pass by all too quickly, for parents and children.

This year Mrs. Prins, Mrs. Kalosieh and Mrs. Sems will be retiring. We hope their retirement years will be filled with good health and great happiness.  We will miss all of you! On behalf of the entire Albert Payson Terhune Elementary School family, I wish you and your family a safe and happy summer and see you all in September, 2008.
