May and June bring many exciting events to first grade. The first graders and their teachers are very excited to participate in J.F.K.’s Field Day on June 13th. This will give us an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather and participate in physical activities with the entire school.
Our next Science unit seems only appropriate as it focuses on the idea of “Keeping Fit and Healthy.” In school we will begin discussing the Food Pyramid, eating balanced meals, choosing healthy snacks, and the importance of plenty of rest and exercise. This is a helpful reminder of how important it is to send in healthy snacks each day and make sure your child is getting adequate amounts of sleep each night. This is a science unit that teaches many lessons beyond the classroom and should be implemented at home as well.
On Tuesday, June 17th the First Graders will be taking a Field Trip to the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. The day will be filled with fun and educational hands on activities. Please send your child with a lunch in a labeled brown bag and only send disposable items.
Our awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 18th at 9:15 a.m. The students have worked hard all year long and are looking forward to this special day. We hope to see you there!
We will also be working on a Whale Research Project in class. Your child can choose to research the Killer, Gray, Blue, or Beluga Whale. They can start preparing now for the project by gathering information about these whales from the internet, library, magazines, and any other resources.
The school year is quickly coming to an end. We’ve had a great year and have enjoyed working not only with your children, but with you as well. Have a safe and happy summer.
