          The First Grade teachers would like to wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year. We hope everyone enjoyed the break. The first graders experienced many wonderful memories in 2009 and look forward to many more exciting adventures in 2010. Among the favorite memories, all of our First Grade classes were able to visit the Outdoor Lab where the children learned about camouflage and had the opportunity to catch frogs in the frog pond.

          Our next reading theme, "Sharing Time," will begin in January. We will focus on short vowels and begin formal spelling. The children will receive a list of words on Monday and will be given a spelling test on Friday. We will send home a letter explaining the procedure and spelling activities for the week as we get closer. Please check your child’s folder for any important information that is sent home regarding spelling. Your help is greatly appreciated!

          We are proud to announce that all of our First Grade classes participated in the Scholastic Books ClassroomsCare Program with New York Giants Quarterback Eli Manning. Each class successfully read over 100 books and completed short book reports for each story.  We would like to thank all of our young readers whose participation helped the Manning family give books to needy children throughout the country. All of the students were awarded certificates for their participation.

We are looking forward to a happy and healthy 2010!
