Springtime will be filled with many exciting things for our Third Graders. Our current Everyday Math unit focuses on Geometry. The students have already become experts in line segments, rays, lines, angles, triangles, and flips, slides, and turns. Previously, students mastered their multiplication facts, which will be useful in the upcoming Math Unit 7: Multiplication and Division. We encourage that you continue to review multiplication and division facts with your child each night as we will continue administering weekly timed tests.
In Reading, we are wrapping up our exploration of the explosion of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii. The students truly enjoyed all of the research and creative projects that accompanied this unit. In the coming week, Patrick and the Great Molasses Explosion will be our next story. We will provide students with a first hand experience of what molasses look, feel, and taste like! The genre for this month’s Book Report is “States”. Each student had to choose one of the fifty United States to research and report on. As a reminder, part of the Third Grade homework mandates that each student reads twenty minutes each night.
Our fascinating journey in Science continues as we explore the Sun, Moon and Earth. Chapter 2 will take us through the motions of the Earth and Moon. Our highly anticipated Native Americans unit in Social Studies is finally underway. We will be studying the Native Americans of the Northwest, Southwest, and the Plains. Discuss with your child the traditions and lifestyle of the Tlingit Indians who we are currently exploring. Each of the Third Grade classes has created a class totem pole, which you can visit outside our classrooms. In a few weeks, Third Graders will begin their annual Research Projects in which they will explore a Native American tribe in depth. With only a few months remaining in the school year, our class trip to Lenni Lenape Park will be here in no time! Additionally, although we are on our final section of States and Capitals it is crucial that you continue to have your child study each night.
Finally, we would like to congratulate, commend, and applaud each of the Third Grade students for completing the NJ ASK. The students worked vigorously for the past few months in preparation for this assessment, and handled the three days of testing beautifully. To our students, we are extremely proud of each of you, and look forward to what the remainder of the school year has in store for all of us!
