JFK Special Subjects

The aim of the JFK Art Program is to provide every student with an understanding and appreciation of the Visual Arts. Students create amazing works of art while learning about the art of other cultures, historical time periods and master artists.

Students are introduced to a wide variety of 2-D and 3-D materials as they learn about the elements and principles of art. They are taught how to improve their artistic abilities in order to express their emotions and opinions through various creative processes.

At the end of the school year we will showcase the talents of our young artists at the JFK Art Extravaganza. This is our annual June Art Show that features hundreds and hundreds of amazing examples of what elementary students are capable of creating.

Be sure to visit our web page on Artsonia.com, the largest online art museum for students. As students finish assignments they will be posted on this website. So, be sure to visit frequently to see new works of art.

Students in grades K-2 will begin the month of May with field day practice.  We will go through the different events so the students can practice the skills they will need on field day.  Once we have completed field day practice the students will complete a unit on kicking for the rest of May and early June.  The final weeks of the school year will be spent on some of the student’s favorite games and activities from earlier in the year.

Students in grades 3-5 will spend the beginning of May completing the events of the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge and a unit on newcomb/volleyball.  Once those events are complete the students will spend the rest of May practicing the different events for field day.  The month of June will be spent completing running bases which is a modified T-Ball game and kicking bases a modified kickball game.

Please make sure your child is wearing sneakers on the days they have gym
and is not wearing any jewelry.

If your child can not participate in class for any reason, please send them to school with a note.

The  sounds of music echoed from the Wayne Hills High School auditorium on April 29,  as the Grade 5 Chorus, Chimes Ensemble, Adanced Strings and Grade 5 Advanced Band  performed at their annual  evening JFK Spring Concert.  The theme of this year's concert was "Many Voices, one World," and parents, friends, and other audience members were treated to musical selections  from America and around the world.

The Grade 5 Chorus performed, under the direction of Mrs. Douthat,  performed selections in  Mandarin, Latin, Spanish,  and Sign Language, in addition to English. The JFK Chimes Ensemble,  a group of Fifth Grade students who have been rehearsing  with Mrs. Douthat during their lunch recesses to prepare  for their performance, accompanied the Grade 5 Chorus in musical selections from Europe and Asia.

The Grade 5 Band and Advanced Strings, under the direction of Mrs. Hughes, performed works based on Sousa, John Williams, and other composers. The Grade 4 Band, following Mrs. Hughes' baton, also had a chance to show  their skills in a special daytime parent performance. All of these  young musicians reprised the concert on May 19 for JFK School.  Their performance proved the old words to be true-- that Music is the universal language of Mankind!  Bravo Grade 5 Chorus,  Chimes Ensemble, Advanced Strings,  Grade 4 Band, and Grade 5 Band!

May is a month of standardized testing throughout the state of New Jersey. NJASK is upon us and because my ESL students get extended time, I will administer it to my 4th and 5th graders during the first two weeks in May. I will also be involved in proctoring the kindergarten assessment in our school and this year I also do the K screening for ESL at Pines Elementary.

Testing aside, the kindergartners continue to learn more about farm animals and their babies. Through songs, use of manipulative and lots of TPR (Total Physical Response), they continue to develop their English skills. The last unit will be “To Market”, a unit where kindergartners will learn more fruit and vegetable vocabulary and market expressions.

Grades 1 and 2 ELLs will continue the Friday Folder activity and this last marking period I included the upper grades too. Every Friday, they will have a new reading selection to practice at home and a list of 10 spelling words to practice for the Friday’s spelling test. It is a great strategy to develop spelling and reading skills.

First graders are working on a unit titled “Families on the Go”, where they practice high frequency words and use graphic organizers to improve their comprehension. Their last unit will be “Everyone Needs a Home” and it will study parts of a house and different places to live around the world. Second graders will finish “Grandpa Toad’s Secrets”, a fictional story that allows for great literacy strategies and in June they will study our last unit called “Make Some Noise”. This last unit is rich in sensory words and grammar and reading practice.

Grades 3-5 will continue with the story titled “The Fox in the Moon”, a Peruvian legend which will be the starting point for more vocabulary and grammar practice. The last genre for this grade level is a science article titled “The Moon” which will introduce my students to more social studies and science concepts and vocabulary.

I am very proud of all my students’ effort and willingness to work in my class. I am also happy to see them flourish in the small group instruction. I take the opportunity to thank all the parents for their continuous support throughout this school year.

The students are encouraged to strengthen their speech skills!    Each child strives to use his or her best speech.   Attaining speech goals can be very challenging, yet very rewarding.  I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a joyous and healthy new year!
