If we need to contact you...
Please remember to keep ALL telephone numbers up to date. It is very important that the school is able to reach you when your child is absent, becomes sick in school or in the event of an emergency! It is for your child's safety that the nurse is in contact with a parent when the child is not in school. Please remember to call the school when your child is out sick or absent.
When to Keep Your Child Home From School
Parents often wonder if they should keep their child home from school when he/she is not feeling well. Although it is sometimes difficult to determine if your child is not well enough to make it through a full day of school, there are some guidelines to keep in mind:
Fever: If your child has had a temperature over 100 F in the last 24 hours, it is best to keep your child home. If he or she has a fever over 101 F you should contact their doctor.
- Rash: Any unknown rash should be checked by a doctor.
- A Cold: When a cold is at its worst with coughing, sneezing, or a runny nose that is green or thick mucous. These symptoms make it difficult to concentrate in school, and are contagious to the other students.
- Diarrhea: This can be uncomfortable to sit in class for a reasonable period of time.
- Conjunctivitis (PinkEye): It is very contagious. The child must have a doctor's note stating that they are on antibiotics for at least 24 hours BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL.
- Nausea and Vomiting: If your child has vomited during the night, they need to be home the next day from school.
Please notify your class parent if your child will be absent from school on any given day. Homework requests will be forwarded to your child's teacher and assignments will be available in the main office after 3:15 pm. A note should accompany your child when he/she returns to school, with the reason for absence.
***If at any time you are not sure, it is helpful to call the school nurse with your questions.***
Medication Policy
The policy of the Wayne Public Schools regarding the administration of prescription and non-prescription medication by the school nurse is as follows:
1. Pupils requiring prescription medication at school must present a written statement from the family physician which identifies the drug, dosage, time, schedule, purpose of the medication and possible side effects. In lieu of the written statement, it will be permissible for the school nurse to accept the prescription bottle as the physician's request providing that the bottle is labeled with the physicians' name, the child's name and dosage schedule, and that the school nurse has verified with the physician that he/she prescribed the medication. Only FDA approved medicines may be administered at school.
2. The pupil's parent or guardian must provide a written statement granting permission for the school nurse to:
a. administer the medication prescribed by the physician; or
b. administer the non-prescription medication as requested by the parent or guardian
c. relieve the Board and its employees of liability for administration of the medication
3. The school nurse obtains approval from the school physician to administer the medication.
4. Any medication to be administered during school hours must be kept in the Health Office. This includes medications such as Tums, Tylenol, Pepto-Bismol, ointments, cough drops, etc.
5. Medication should be brought to school in original labeled containers.
Physical Examinations
As part of the school health program, it is recommended that your child have an annual physical examination by your family physician. However, the policy for the Wayne Township Public Schools requires that all new students and students in grades K, 4 and 8 have a physical examination .
It is recommended that these examinations be performed by your family physician. Your physician's knowledge of your child makes him/her best qualified to interpret the information necessary to improve your child's health. The family physician can assist the school in making the adjustments in the educational program for every student.
A medical examination performed during the summer is acceptable (sports, camp, working paper physicals, etc.). The appropriate form to have completed by your physician is available in the school nurse's office.
