Welcome to Our 3rd Grade

The third marking period will be starting out with our new Reading Theme, “What’s Cooking?” We will read stories that feature foods like panettone, kimbap, a roast, and fried chicken. This theme will be followed by Weather Watch, where we will read stories that include tornadoes, thunder storms, and blizzards.

The literacy skills for the third marking period will include; following directions, sequence of events, problem solving, predicting outcomes, making judgments, and clarifying information.  Our third graders will also be writing using and identifying adjectives, adverbs, suffixes, dialogue, descriptive language and personification.  By the end of the marking period, all third graders will be writing completely in cursive!

Mrs. Przybylinski’s class will be exploring the theme, Taking Care of Business. This will include comparing and contrasting information, determining importance, and author’s purpose.  They will also write with these skills in mind; sequence, editing, procedural steps, and word choice. Look for practice with contractions, singular pronouns, plural pronouns, proper nouns, and verbs.

Unit 6 in math will be devoted to Geometry.  We will be studying; lines, line segments, and rays.  We will also work with angles, symmetry, and congruence.  Time will be spent exploring polygons and polyhedrons.  Next, Unit 7 will take us back to multiplication and division.  We will be extending facts.  For example, 10,000x70, and 2400 divided by 80.  Also, students will be multiplying two digits by one digit and solving math equations with parentheses.

In Social Studies we will be studying, Government at Work, learning about the four levels of government, laws, taxes, services provided, and getting to know how our community government works and who represents us.  Mrs. Przybylinski’s class will study “Our Communities” and “Movable Communities” during this third marking period.

The third grades will also be looking forward to our trip to Ellis Island in April. We will prepare for this with authentic literature about immigrants and partake in discussions about how our country became known as “the melting pot.” Watch for more information about our class trip!

Science will include the study of Earth.  The Earth Science chapter will discuss water, weather, rocks and soil, and changes on Earth.  This will be followed by the Space and Technology chapter and the study of planets.
