The 5th grade students are very hard at work as they continue the school year. The students are excited and eager to learn. Their enthusiasm is evident by the beautiful displays of their work found in the school hallways. You can read below to see all of the wonderful things that are happening!
5th Grade Language Arts
As this year goes on, we have continued to work on many fun and exciting activities in language arts! Each teacher has come up with a different creative way to teach the strategies, cause and effect, generalizations, and drawing conclusions. These activities are tailored to fit our individual classes and to create life long learners. In addition, students have learned subject verb agreement, verb tenses, and irregular verbs. We can already see the growth in our students' comprehension and writing, and we are excited to continue on this successful path for the rest of the school year.
5th Grade Mathematics
As the year progresses, the students will continue to develop an understanding of math skills. They will explore concepts of pre-algebra and understand how to write numbers using exponents, scientific notation, and number-and-word notation. The use of the mnemonic device, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, will help the students remember the Rules for Order of Operations: 1) Parentheses, 2) Exponents, 3) Multiplication and Division, and 4) Addition and Subtraction. Students will use calculators and slide rules to develop and apply rules for adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers.
Earlier in the year, equivalent fractions were reviewed. That knowledge will be applied in order to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. Students will also develop an understanding of fraction multiplication and fraction division. A variety of games will be played to reinforce the skills and promote strategic thinking.
Near the end of the third marking period, students will work with coordinate graphs, extend area concepts, develop a formula for volume, and explore capacity relationships. The students will be using a variety of strategies that include logical reasoning, recognizing patterns, and using computation, formulas, estimations and physical models. It is exciting to conquer the challenges that math presents.
5th Grade Science
After wrapping up Unit A (Life Science), the fifth grade students will begin their study of Earth Science with a chapter about how water moves through the environment. Chapter 7 focuses on outlining and understanding the water cycle, comparing ocean water and fresh water, and clouds. Chapter 8 focuses on how weather changes and will include how air moves, air masses, causes of severe weather, weather forecasts, and climate. Chapter 9 focuses on the kinds of processes that change Earth’s surfaces. This chapter includes Earth’s structure, causes of earthquakes and volcanoes, weathering, erosion, rocks, and minerals.
With such fascinating material and hands-on experiments, the fifth grade students are sure to dazzle us with their knowledge!
5th Grade Social Studies
Our study of the history of the United States continues! We learned the impact the early explorers had in North America and now we move to the specific regions of our country. We first look at the New England colonies. Although we know about the voyage on the Mayflower, we expand our knowledge of New England colonies as we study reasons for their development and the impact they have on the United States today. We leave the New England colonies to study the Southern Colonies. We explore their growth and development as well. Once again we study key people who had a strong impact on this area. As we study the Southern Colonies and in conjunction with our research of famous Black Americans, we are able to explain the important cultural contributions made to our culture. We continue our journey to the Middle Colonies and learn about the area that is our home. Once again we learn about the people who settled here and the reason they came. The study of these three areas leads us to the War for Independence and the creation of our nation.
