What Do ViPS Do?
The ViPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) are students who volunteer —as needed— in the Media Center, the Main Office, the Nurses’ Office or Guidance.
ViPS students report to the Media Center 1-2 times a week during their lunch periods to receive their volunteer assignments. Volunteers may set their own schedule and request specific tasks or work locations. These requests will be accommodated as much as possible, although volunteers should be willing to be flexible and volunteer where need is greatest.
ViPS volunteers can earn NHS service credits for their volunteer hours and receive a certificate at the end of the school year. In order to be considered a volunteer in good standing, ViPS volunteers must have earned 10 volunteer credits. A half credit is awarded for every 30 minutes of volunteer time. In order to earn the 10 credit minimum, a volunteer will need to sign in and donate time for a total minimum of 20 lunch periods.
Volunteering in the Media Center
ViPS are trained by the media specialist to perform a variety of tasks in the Media Center. These could include:
- checking books in and out for other students;
- retrieving, shelving or repairing books;
- creating themed library displays;
- assisting in the “processing” of newly-arrived books;
- assisting students in using the online catalog and/or locating digital or print materials;
- …as well as a variety of clerical and light house-keeping duties.
ViPS volunteers who have special skills or interests – such as technological skills or artistic talent – will have the opportunity to use their special talents.
ViPS volunteers must be courteous, helpful, reliable and willing to complete assigned tasks diligently. Each volunteer will be given an ID tag that must be worn at all times.
Joining the ViPS Is A Great Way to Make Friends!
Several times a year, volunteers in good standing will be invited to “exclusive” ViPS pizza and ice cream parties!
