PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

November 10, 2008

As the first Marking Period of the 2008-09 school year closes, I would like to share some of the educational experiences we have had at Wayne Hills.

In keeping with the election coverage, Mr. Shale’s AP Government classes held a debate and a mock election. The entire student body was invited to attend the debate and over 800 students observed informative presentations by our AP Government students.

In our school wide election Barack Obama defeated John McCain by a 2 to 1 margin.

New Jersey Violence Awareness week was recognized school wide by students creating powerful posters and displaying them in the common areas around the building.  An activity in Freshman Seminar classes provided statistics that were placed on lockers in the Freshmen Wing to denote how often acts of violence occur across the United States.  Also, various clubs in our building provided morning announcements that focused on brutality and aggression in our world.

The Wayne Hills Instrumental Music Department hosted its annual New Jersey Music Educators Festival, sharing our new field with 13 area bands.  Congratulations to the Wayne Hills Marching Band and Guard for receiving a gold rating.

Our athletic teams represented us well in the fall season and post season appearances were made by our Field Hockey, Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Girls Tennis and Football Teams.

-Wayne Hills Field Hockey Team won the Section I Group 3 North State Championship.  The team, coached by Ms. Jenn Badami will compete in the Super 16 State Tournament.

-The Girls Tennis Team won the Passaic County Championship, congratulations to Mr. Keogh, Mr. Riley and their players.

-The Football Team finished the regular season 9-0, won the NBIAL Championship and has compiled a 49 game winning streak.  The team, coached by Mr. Chris Olsen will compete in the Section I Group 3 State Championship playoffs.

-Both the Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams qualified for the State Meet of Champions, the first time in the school's history.  Congratulations are in order for both the student athletes and coaches, Mr. Bob Holden and Mr. Bob Bell.

Freshman “Mix It Up Day” will be held on November 13.  Students will change their seats in the lunchroom in an effort to create unity and refine interpersonal skills.

Traditionally the 3rd week of November is Spirit Week at Wayne Hills.  Check the student council page for details and updates.  This week promotes challenges in a collaborative environment; each grade level participates in penny wars and a food drive, providing for donations for various organizations in Passaic County.  The week culminates with a Spirit Rally on Friday, November 21st.

The second marking period begins November 18th.

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching.  I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in our school community a peaceful holiday season.

Mr. Frank Markowick
