Understanding Financial Aid:

There are several major types of financial aid available:

  • Grants: Money with no strings attached-meaning you don't have to pay it back. This is really the equivalent of hitting the financial aid jackpot. Grants are often awarded by the government and based on financial need.
  • Loans: Money you borrow and are required to pay back with interest. In most cases the terms are more generous than other types of loans such as home or auto loans. Loans are based on financial need.
  • Work-Study: Money you earn the old-fashioned way-by working. This federal program subsidizes your on-campus employment while you are enrolled in school. The program is based on financial need.
  • Scholarships: Money with no strings attached-meaning you don't have to pay it back. Like grants, scholarships are financial aid jackpots. They are awarded based on a variety of criteria including academics, financial need, leadership, special talents, academic area, or career field.
