Computer Applications

Anthony Wayne Middle School students take part in many different and exciting activities during the computer cycles course.  All three grades begin the marking period with a review of the importance of typing properly. The students take a series of timed typing tests to determine their starting words per minute typing speed.  Throughout the marking period it is the goal of each student to beat his or her own highest typing speed!  We also keep a “words per minute (speed) scoreboard” in the classroom to act as a motivation for the students to keep practicing.

 

6th Grade

The sixth grade class begins the marking period by practicing typing skills through projects such as musical computers, journal writing, and timed typing exercises.  They then move on to learn more about Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher through a variety of exciting assignments.  The assignments include:

Word:

  • “I AM” poem
  • Self-collage

PowerPoint:

  • A PowerPoint with backgrounds drawn in Paint
  • “On The Day I Was Born” PowerPoint

Publisher:

  • Calendar
  • Newsletter

**TYPING REVIEW**

7th Grade

Our seventh students have so much fun working in groups to create their own companies using many of the Microsoft Office programs.  Some groups choose to create ice cream companies, others pick pizza companies, and still others decide on candy companies.

An overview of some of the assignments the seventh grade students complete during their computer cycle are:

            Word:

  • “I Am” poem
  • Self-collage
  • Company information/history

Excel:

  • Graphs of their survey/research questions (for their company)

Paint:

  • Company logo
  • Company products/merchandise

PowerPoint:

  • “Vacation” PowerPoints J (using research about a vacation site of their choice)
  • Animated PowerPoints

Publisher:

  • Calendars
  • Brochures for their companies

 

8th Grade

The eighth grade students build on what they have learned in sixth and seventh grade by learning more uses and functions of the Microsoft Office Programs.  Some of the projects the eighth grade students take part in during the computer cycles are: 

            Word:

  • “I AM” poem
  • Self-collage
  • Business letters (to the person of their choice)

Excel:

  • A real life budget exercise!! $$$

PowerPoint:                                                    

  • “Meet ______” PowerPoints (all about themselves J)
  • Karaoke PowerPoints

Publisher:

  • Calendars
  • Flyers

Access:
