Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) prepares the students to begin their journey as independent, productive citizens. These courses help the students to increase their ability to act responsibly and work cooperatively.
In 6th grade, the students learn the basics of hand sewing. They make a small stuffed animal, using two different hand stitches. After learning about safety in the kitchen, the students also learn simple food preparation and table setting. They learn the basics on how to use a microwave oven and how to combine a few ingredients to prepare an easy snack.
The 7th grade students take the sewing aspect a step further. The procedures for hand sewing are reviewed and they learn about sewing on a sewing machine. Safety in using the machine is stressed. Then they learn about the parts of the machine, what each part does, and how to thread the machine. Students practice sewing on the machine and make a small pillow. Once the techniques are mastered, the project that the students complete is a locker organizer that they can use to store things in their lockers.
The 8th grade curriculum is based on simple food preparation. The students learn the importance of safety in the kitchen. They learn about measuring, equipment, how to read a recipe, basic nutrition. They prepare food items using recipes and work in groups, rotating their job responsibilities. Eating what they prepare is usually the highlight of the class.
