1. What documents are required to complete registration for school?

Please bring all originals and copies will be made at the school, and always call for an appointment when registering your child.
2. What are the hours of the school day?
Homeroom begins at 8:00 am and dismissal is at 2:45.
3. How early may my child arrive at school?
Walkers and car pool students may enter the building at 7:50 and must report to homeroom by 8:00 am
4. Is there a before or after school child care program?
This program is not available at the middle school level.

6. How do I let the school know that my child will not be in school?
Absence from school should be held to an absolute minimum in the best educational interest of the student. The only reasons permitted for an excused absence are religious holidays, illness of the students, or a death in the immediate family.
- Please call 389-2120, ext. 70 prior to 8:00 to let the nurse know your child will be absent.
- For medically excuse absences, please secure a physicals note while at the office. Provide this note to the nurse upon return to school so that she can record the absence as excused
- There may be times when parents choose to keep children out of school for other reasons, such as for traveling and family vacation trips. We, of course, discourage this practice, asking that you plan your vacation during scheduled school vacations.
- In cases of all pupil absences, students are held responsible for assignments. Teachers are expected to provide pupils with missed assignments and a suitable amount of time is provided for that purpose upon the student’s return.
7. What is the attendance policy?
Should a student be absent for 21 days of more of unexcused absences, there will be a direct impact on his/her program of study which can result in summer school or possible retention.
8. How many hours does my child need to be present in school to receive credit for the school day?
Your child must be in school for four (4) instructional hours to receive credit for that school day.
9. What do I do when I want to visit the school?
Visitors must report directly to the main office. Articles to be delivered to students during school hours are to be left at the office. All visitors must sign in and wear a visitors badge when authorized to be present in the building.
10. What are the drop off and pick-up procedures?
For students who are driven to school, there is a designated drop off/pick up point, which is below and to the right of the entrance circle. The circle is reserved for buses only. The area to the left is reserved for staff parking and parents may not drop off or pick up students in this staff parking area.
11. How are report cards distributed?
Interim and final marking period report cards are mailed home to parents and guardians as per the following scheduled

13. What do I do when my child needs to leave school early?
All students are expected to remain in school for the entire school day. If a student must leave the building, he/she must sign out from the main office with a parent or adult authorized by the parent via a note or listed on the emergency card. Advanced notification is expected (except for emergencies). ID’s are required.
Note: Students are discouraged from leaving during the school day for office visits, i.e. doctor, dentist, orthodontist. Appointments should be scheduled before or after school.
14. Are cell phones, cameras or ipods permitted in school?
Cell phones /Beepers
Board policy does allow for students to have cell phones in their possession during the school day with the following expectations:
- Cell phones are to be stored away in lockers throughout the day – NOT ON THE STUDENT’S PERSON.
- Cell phones are turned off at all times.
Violation of policy results in the confiscation of the phone only to be returned to a parent and disciplinary measures for the student.
Cameras
At no time should students be bringing cameras to school. Violation of this rule will result in confiscation of the camera to be returned only to a parent and disciplinary measures to the student.
Ipods / walkmans
Such electronic devices are not to be in the student’s possession during the school day including lunch/rec. and study hall. Such devices are to be stored in lockers throughout the day – not on the student’s person. Violation of this rule will result in the confiscation of the item only to be returned to a parent and disciplinary measures for the student.
15. May I call school to directly talk to my child?
With 733 students in our school, it is impossible for us to allow parents to call to directly speak to their children. Our secretaries are available to take important messages that they will communicate to students.
16. What is the procedure for the make-up of school work due to absences?
Students who are absent, for any reason, will be required to make up work missed in each class. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain all make-up work from his/her teachers immediately upon return to school. Failure to obtain make-up work is no excuse for not doing work missed.
The teacher should arrange make-up opportunities for students who have missed tests or important assignments because of excused absences. Students are responsible for class assignments as follows:

Homework assignments missed due to an absence of 3 or more days can be requested through the guidance office. Please allow 24 hours to process these requests
17. May my child wear jewelry during Physical Education classes?
Due to safety considerations, students may not wear jewelry during gym classes. Students should plan to schedule ear piercing in July or during the marking period in which they are scheduled for health.
18. Are there extra –curricular opportunities?
Clubs and Activities at AWMS are formed and organized in conjunction with the interests and talents of the teachers serving as advisors. As a result, clubs can change from year to year. Clubs and activities offered this year at AW include:

19. What are the Discipline and Dress Code Policies for Wayne Township Schools?
These policies are available on line at the wayneschools.com website and are available in your child’s daily agenda/planner. It is important that you and your child are familiar with these policies. This policy delineates the rights and responsibilities of students, parents, and staff
20. Where is the lost and found located?
Students who find lost articles are asked to take them to the cafetorium or the office if a valuable is found such as jewelry, purses or books, where they can be claimed by the owner. Items of wearing apparel and personal property brought to school should be labeled with the student’s name. This identification will make it possible to return lost articles to the owner. When an item is lost, a student should check lost and found located in both the cafetorium and the office.
21. How do I find out about school closings or delayed openings?
School closing or delays due to snow or any other emergency situation will be announced over the following TV stations:

A message regarding school closing will be available on the school district telephone number 973-633-3000. Hours for the 90 minute delayed opening at the middle school are 9:30am - 2:45pm.
