8th Grade Washington, D.C. Trip
May 12 - 14, 2010
October, 2009
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As most of you already know, one of the highlights of the year for our 8th graders is the annual three-day class trip to Washington, D.C.
This year’s trip is scheduled for May 12-14, 2010 and it will follow a similar itinerary as found in past years with visits to Arlington Cemetery, Smithsonian Museums, Holocaust Museum and as many of the Memorials as we can possibly squeeze in. Social events will include a dinner/DJ cruise aboard the Spirit of Washington, plus a class pizza party/dance. Students sleep in a room of 4 with 2 double beds. They may bring a sleeping bag if they wish.
In preparation for the trip, all students will receive instruction on the significance of our Nation’s Capitol, plus several orientation sessions in their history classes.
In order to attend the trip, all students must reserve their spot no later that Monday, November 2, 2009. To reserve your child’s place on the class trip please complete the form and all the attached medical forms, and return to school with a $75.00 deposit (cash or check payable to George Washington Middle School.) Deposit money is refundable until January 8, 2010. Any student that is removed from the trip due to their conduct will have their deposit refunded only until this date. Any student removed after January 8th will not have their deposit refunded. The total cost for the trip will be $455.00. Final payment will be due on March 29, 2010. Scholarship money is available through out PTO for any family experiencing financial hardship. Please call me directly should you be in need for any assistance as we certainly wish to have all students attend the trip.
Please sign the attached form if you would like to be considered as a chaperone. If you are selected you will be notified prior to January 6, 2010; a $75.00 deposit will be due on January 12, 2010, and the final payment will be due on March 29, 2010. The total cost for chaperones is also $495.00.
We are looking forward to another great trip to Washington!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Jane Tierney
Principal

Challenge 24 Club
The Challenge 24 Club meets every Tuesday from 2:50 – 3:50 pm with Mrs. Mauriello in Room 127! Students can bring permission slips to me by our first meeting, Tuesday October 13th.
6th, 7th, and 8th grade students play a game called the“24 Game,” in which there are 96 cards, each with four numbers. Students have to be the first to come up with an order of operations which uses all four numbers and makes 24. They must make all computations mentally and then explain their procedure aloud to the group. Students quickly begin to look for patterns, verbalize the order of operations used, discuss strategies, and improve mental math abilities.
The game can be played cooperatively with 2 or more children or in a tournament style. There are 3 levels of difficulty within each game and 6 different editions of the “24 Game”: Single Digits, Double Digits, Variables, Fractions Fluency, Integers, and Algebra Readiness. The various levels and editions allow for students in grades six, seven, and eight with varying abilities to all play confidently at their own ability level and then improve and advance.
It is not too late to join!

Fitness Club
George Washington Middle School will be offering a one hour per week fitness club that will be available on Monday’s after school for all students who are interested in joining. The fitness club will focus on exercise, sports education with game play, and the development of teamwork and sportsmanship. You do not need to be an athlete to benefit from the club.
The club will give each student a great opportunity to be introduced to the different types of multi-cultural games as well as traditional games. Each student will learn the different rules and regulations, different athletic techniques used, and will have heavy focus on sportsmanship and teamwork.

REBEL stands for Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies and is a group of students who work together to expose the lies of "Big" tobacco. REBEL 2 is the middle school level of this state wide program. The group meets twice a month where we discover facts about smoking through games, videos, research, and presentations.
