This year students will be required to read two books over the course of the summer. Students will select one book for English class, and one book from any of the other disciplines. The exception to this is freshmen who will read both TROY and THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS. All other students are to be sure that their books are chosen from the appropriate grade level. As always, it is the hope of the Wayne Schools that students will be encouraged to read more than the two required books before returning to school in September. Teachers, students, and department chairs contributed to titles on this list. The list was reviewed by the Board of Education and a parent group, all of whom approved of the books. That being said, we recognize that not everyone’s thoughts about literature are the same, and therefore, we suggest that parents review their children’s selections before their children begin reading. We believe that it is in the best interest of each student to have his/her own copy of summer reading books so that the student may read at his/her leisure, as well as, highlight and/or annotate the text at will. To that end, local bookstores have been provided with our summer reading list. If purchasing the book is not possible, a copy of the book may be obtained at the public library which has multiple copies of the titles or your child’s school may be able to lend a limited number of copies to students on a first come- first served basis between June 2 and June 5.
