How do I let the school know that my child will not be in school?
Absence from school should be held to an absolute minimum in the best educational interest of the student. The only reasons permitted for an excused absence are religious holidays, illness of the students, or a death in the immediate family.
- Please call 633-3140, ext. 70 prior to 8:00 AM to let the nurse know your child will be absent.
- For medically excuse absences, please secure a physicians note while at the office. Provide this note to the nurse upon return to school so that she can record the absence as excused.
- There may be times when parents choose to keep children out of school for other reasons, such as for traveling and family vacation trips. We, of course, discourage this practice, asking that you plan your vacation during scheduled school vacations.
Parents must report all student absences by calling us at 973-633-3140. You may leave your message during non-school hours on our answering machine. Upon returning to school all children must present a note, signed by a parent, stating the reason for the absence. These notes are to be given to your child’s homeroom teacher.
- In all cases of pupil absence, students are held responsible for assignments. Teachers are expected to provide pupils with missed assignments and a suitable amount of time is provided for that purpose upon the student’s return.
What is the attendance policy?
Should a student be absent for 21 days of more of unexcused absences, there will be a direct impact on his/her program of study which can result in summer school or possible retention.

All vehicles must continue around and through the parking area before exiting the school grounds. Do not attempt to backup or turn around once you are on the school grounds. May I call school to directly talk to my child?
With 640 students in our school, it is impossible for us to allow parents to call and speak directly to their children. In the event of an emergency, our secretaries are available to relay a message. We ask that parents refrain from calling the school with non-emergency messages for their children. Please provide your children with this information (doctor appointments, etc.) prior to departure in the morning. Thank you for your cooperation.
What is the procedure for the make-up of school work due to absences?
Students who are absent, for any reason, will be required to make up work missed in each class. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain all make-up work from his/her teachers immediately upon return to school. Failure to obtain make-up work is no excuse for not doing work missed.
The teacher should arrange make-up opportunities for students who have missed tests or important assignments because of excused absences. Students are responsible for class assignments as follows:
Days Absent Make-Up Deadline

What is the Dress Code Policy for Wayne Township Schools?
5511- DRESS AND GROOMING
Date Created: October, 2009
Date Edited: March, 2010
N.J.S.A. 18A:11-1; 18A:11-7; 18A:11-8; 18A:11-9
The Board of Education recognizes each pupil’s mode of dress and grooming is a manifestation of the pupil’s personal style and individual preferences. The Board will impose its judgment on pupils and parent(s) or legal guardian(s) only when a pupil’s dress and grooming affect the educational program of the schools.
Everyone entering Wayne Public Schools is expected to dress in an appropriate manner. Some forms of attire are inappropriate in a school where safe, distraction-free learning is the primary goal. Thus, all Wayne pupils are expected to observe the following:
- No pupil may wear clothing which reveals his or her back, midriff, upper thigh or cleavage; no pupil may wear clothing which exposes any underwear, or which is “see through” (i.e., through which underwear or bare skin is visible); no pupil may wear clothing which promotes any illegal behavior, such as the use of alcohol or drugs, in either text or illustration, inappropriate language or which denigrates any racial, ethnic, or religious group in text or illustration.
- No hats, bandanas or other type of decorative head covering is permitted.
- No clothing may be worn that allies with or promotes gang activity.
Where is the lost and found located?
Students who find lost articles such as clothing, books, pens are asked to take them to the custodian’s office. Valuables such as jewelry, purses or eyeglasses should be taken to the main office where they can be claimed by the owner.
Items of wearing apparel and personal property brought to school should be labeled with the student’s name. This identification will make it possible to return lost articles to the owner. When an item is lost, a student should check the lost and found boxes outside the custodian room or the main office.
How do I find out about school closings or delayed openings?
The Connect-Ed System will call everyone in case of an emergency snow closing. The system was used last year and was extraordinarily successful. Our system has a number of options in it, one of which allows families to opt out of receiving an emergency closing call. If you do not want to receive an emergency closing call, please call Mrs. Conway, school secretary. Please note that if you have children in schools other than George Washington M.S., you must contact that school as well in order to have your name removed from that list. Also note that for snow closing emergency calls, both your home and cell numbers will be called.
