Who We Are
-
Pointing the spotlight on words and their link to expression & thought.
Emphasis (our literary review club) provides Wayne Valley students a setting for the appreciation, discussion, and exchange of verbal creations (literary, poetic, exploratory). Our team works diligently to create thought-provoking questions, writing exercises, and original literature of their own to share at each meeting.

"The Writing of the Stars" Andrew Graf, grade 10 THIRD PLACE
Stars are such incredible things.
They create murals of light that decorate night sky,
So meticulously made that their masterpieces can only be described as a miracle.
Stars have shone on Earth before there was an Earth to shine on.
They are our past, present and future.
Stars tell the stories of all who came before us;
Tales as old as time.
We have long been fascinated by stars.
They draw pictures in the night sky, and act as a map to guide us.
Their art goes beyond the works of Van Gogh.
Stars give us a feeling of comfort similar to a warm summer breeze brushing against your skin.
Stars can see the dreams you are yet to have.
They know what you want and love.
This is because they have already seen it.
They have seen the thousands of generations before you come and go.
They know you better than you know yourself.
They know every man, woman and child that ever was.
So when you are told that your life is an open book, know that it is true.
Your life is an entire novel that has been carefully scripted from the start.
It was written by the stars.

"A Lonely Walk" Ava Gordon, 10th grade, FIRST PLACE
Night, a baby who is sleeping,
the expression is so serene and quiet.
Now, the night is deep, and I am alone,
feeling more lost than being found,
striking a streak of pain within me,
unable to fix what has been broken.
I remember the night we met.
I remember the things you said to me.
I remember your voice.
Your laugh.
Your scent.
The lines in your cheeks when you smiled
that beautiful smile,
just like stars twinkling in the moonlight,
but why?
Why did you leave?
They say the world was made for two,
the sun and the moon, the land and the sea,
but somehow you managed to let me be consumed by the darkness.
I never meant for this to happen, but here, looking up at the stars,
I understand.
So as I lay in the grass,
feeling the wind blow through my hair,
I close my eyes and drift off to a place where there is no pain,
a place with you in it.
