How do I let the school know that my child will not be in school?
Absence from school should be held to an absolute minimum in the best educational interest of the student. The only reasons permitted for an excused absence are religious holidays, illness of the students, or a death in the immediate family.
- Please call 633-3140, ext. 70 prior to 8:00 AM to let the nurse know your child will be absent.
- For medically excuse absences, please secure a physicians note while at the office. Provide this note to the nurse upon return to school so that she can record the absence as excused.
- There may be times when parents choose to keep children out of school for other reasons, such as for traveling and family vacation trips. We, of course, discourage this practice, asking that you plan your vacation during scheduled school vacations.
Parents must report all student absences by calling us at 973-633-3140. You may leave your message during non-school hours on our answering machine. Upon returning to school all children must present a note, signed by a parent, stating the reason for the absence. These notes are to be given to your child’s homeroom teacher.
- In all cases of pupil absence, students are held responsible for assignments. Teachers are expected to provide pupils with missed assignments and a suitable amount of time is provided for that purpose upon the student’s return.
-
What is the attendance policy?
Should a student be absent for 21 days of more of unexcused absences, there will be a direct impact on his/her program of study which can result in summer school or possible retention.

Note: The entrance road off Magnolia becomes a one-way thoroughfare once you reach the parking lot area. All vehicles must continue around and through the parking area before exiting the school grounds. Do not attempt to backup or turn around once you are on the school grounds. Since students are not admitted into the building until 7:52am, please do not drop them off before 7:45am. THE LENOX ROAD ENTRANCE IS FOR BUSES ONLY.
Walkers & Bicycle Riders: Please walk carefully and use the sidewalks whenever possible. Bike riders should wear helmets and exercise extreme caution. No bike riding is permitted on the school grounds between 7:40am and 3:05pm. Use the bike rack and a lock to secure your bike during the day.

May I call school to directly talk to my child?
With 640 students in our school, it is impossible for us to allow parents to call and speak directly to their children. In the event of an emergency, our secretaries are available to relay a message. We ask that parents refrain from calling the school with non-emergency messages for their children. Please provide your children with this information (doctor appointments, etc.) prior to departure in the morning. Thank you for your cooperation.

What is the procedure for the make-up of school work due to absences?
Students who are absent, for any reason, will be required to make up work missed in each class. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain all make-up work from his/her teachers immediately upon return to school. Failure to obtain make-up work is no excuse for not doing work missed.
The teacher should arrange make-up opportunities for students who have missed tests or important assignments because of excused absences. Students are responsible for class assignments as follows:
Days Absent Make-Up Deadline
1-3 days 5 days
4-6 days 10 days
7 days By arrangement with teacher
EXTENDED ABSENCE
Homework assignments missed due to an absence of 3 or more days can be requested through the guidance office. Please allow 24 hours to process these requests -
May my child wear jewelry during Physical Education classes?
Due to safety considerations, students may not wear jewelry during gym classes. Students should plan to schedule ear piercing in July or during the marking period in which they are scheduled for health.
Wayne Board of Education policy regarding the wearing of jewelry in physical education classes is strictly enforced at this level. All jewelry must be removed during physical education class each day. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.
