Yesterday, Governor Murphy announced that all public and private schools across New Jersey will remain closed for the remainder of this school year. As a result, our distance learning program will continue through the final day of school, which is currently scheduled for June 18th. In response, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) canceled the spring season for all high school sports.
While the announcement that schools would be closed for the remainder of the year was probably not a surprise, it did lead to feelings of profound loss because it ended any hope of retaining the traditional culminating activities and events that are in many cases a right of passage for students and their families. I understand that this letter would be woefully incomplete if I did not address some of the issues surrounding these activities and events that all of you are thinking about today.
