(Wayne, New Jersey) - On February 22, Mrs. Hilary Caruso’s Kindergarten class at John F. Kennedy Elementary School welcomed Acting Secretary of State Tahesha Way. Secretary Way joined the class to celebrate Black History Month and the artistic work of Alma Woodsey Thomas, an African-American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is now recognized as one of the most important American painters of the 20th century. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, and she exhibited her paintings at the White House three times.
