We celebrated MakersDay at Wayne Hills with MakersWeek in March! Over 1000 students and staff explored MakersDay activities during Wayne Hills’ MakersWeek. Students were instructed that the only rule was create something, and that no phones were allowed.
Texting was replaced by talking, and instead of playing games on phones, students collaborated on puzzles, made Shrinky Dinks and bracelets, and bedazzled phone cases, nail polishes, and more. Students worked on sublimation design and printing (t-shirts, mugs, pencil cases, and pillow cases), collages using magazines, paint, and markers, sewing, clay, building with Legos, Perler bead designs, Mandala art projects, and more. With over 15 stations to choose from, there was something for everyone, and lots of new hobbies explored, and skills learned.
Throughout the week, English teachers tied lesson plans to The Great Gatsby (creating collages of what characters feel like inside vs. project outside, and also creating a Lego Jazz Club set) and The Odyssey (making bracelets with words from the epic poem), while Graphic Design worked on bringing their designs to life in the form of pillowcases and pencil cases, as well as mugs. Our French Classes created French-themed buttons, and the French and Italian students also used the Makerspace to create Mardi Gras masks. Our LLD students created a group sticker mosaic by working together.
We are excited that our event has kickstarted students and staff thinking outside the box, and look forward to sparking creativity in the future!
